From the stone age to the 21st century in a historic power station
This unusual venue is a museum, opened in 2015, that celebrates the prehistoric stone carvings found in rich abundance on rocks at Gobustan and Gala. It adds medieval gravestones and works produced by sculptor Huseyn Hagvas to give an overview of Azerbaijan’s development of the plastic arts over many millennia. All this is within a former power station built in 1901 by the Siemens brothers to provide an energy supply for the newly developed oil fields. Located close to the Caspian just south of the old city, the venue offers meeting facilities for around 200 people in banquet setup, as many as 600 cocktail style.
