At Yanardag (the Burning Mountain) in Mammadli village a wall of flames has been burning naturally and somewhat mysteriously on a hillside for thousands of years. Having first come to global attention way back in the 13th century after appearing in the writings of Venetian traveller Marco Polo, these mysterious flames continue to mesmerise many who visit the site today. Recently the Yanardag Reserve was developed to include a 500-seater amphitheatre and contemporary on-site museum where you’ll be able to learn all about Baku’s naturally-burning fires and their role in making Azerbaijan an ancient centre of Zoroastrianism.
